Fundamentals 1
Ages 7-8

Hello, World of Code

  • No prior coding experience necessary
  • Prospective students must turn 7 - 8 years old within the current calendar year (for 9-10 year olds or 11-12 year olds with no prior coding experience, please proceed to Basics 1 or Basics 3 respectively)

FUNdamentals 1 provides a fun introduction to the world of code for our youngest Code Campers aged 7-8 through the use of concrete learning aids and simple block-based programming. Students will be invited to explore the world of computers (nope, they don't all have a big screen and a keyboard), and learn how coding can give them the power to create new possibilities with technology(yes, you can do great things with computers if you can tell them what to do)!

Code Campers will begin their foray into block-based programming with more concrete, visual tech aids and end it off with an introduction to the Scratch platform. Fundamental coding concepts such as sequencing, loops, and events will be introduced, with a focus on breaking these abstract concepts down into simpler, more tangible ideas that are easy for younger kids to understand. Basic typing and mouse skills are also taught to help inculcate good computer habits from young, and better prepare kids to enter the Basics sequence.

After this course, kids will have an understanding of coding as a means of instructing computers, and begin to appreciate the myriad of possibilities that are achievable with code.
